Bonnie, Jackie, and Irene stayed after-hours at the Seahorse to watch a movie in the basementâs home theater instead of hurrying off.
Irene flopped into a recliner and pulled the side handle, sending her feet flying up on the foot rest. âLetâs watching something good. A tearjerker, but also romantic ⦠and inspiring. How about When Harry Met Sally?â
Jackie fumbled through the large stack of DVDs. âI donât see that one here.â
Bonnie sat in the chair next to Ireneâs and pulled a blanket over her, then grabbed the large bowl of hot popcorn she just microwaved. âWhat about Youâve Got Mail?â
Jackie scanned through the DVDs some more before finally stopping on one. âWell, that one is here,â she said as she popped the disc in the DVD player, then hopped into her seat next to Bonnie with the remote.
âCan someone dim the lights? Iâm much too cozy under here,â Bonnie asked as she popped a handful of popcorn into her mouth.
Irene rolled her eyes and chuckled. âAnything for the princess.â
Just as Irene dimmed the lights, voices came down the steps.
âWhat should we watch tonight? Breakfast at Tiffanyâs?â Kim asked.
Dolly shook her head. âNo, I was thinking something more along the lines of a dark drama,â she said as she flicked the lights on.
Bonnie, Jackie, and Irene all squinted from the brightness just as the movie started playing.
âWhat is going on here?â Dolly asked.
Jackie cleared her throat. âWell, weâre finished with work, so we decided to stay and watch a movie together. Have you ever noticed that this space was made to look like a drive-in theater?â she said as she pointed to the starry black ceiling.
Kim smiled and nodded. âItâs great isnât it?â
Dolly nudged her in the ribs. âYes, we knew that. However, Kim and I usually come down here to watch a movie. This is our night to do it.â
Irene patted the chair next to her. âWell, youâre more than welcome to join us. Weâre about to watch Youâve Got Mail, about a small bookshop owner whoââ
Dolly flipped her hand in the air. âIâve seen that one a million times.â
Kim flicked the lights back off, grabbed a blanket from the shelf and sat next to Irene, giddiness overcoming her. âPass the popcorn, Iâm ready!â Jackie handed her the popcorn bowl as Kim leaned back into the recliner.
Dolly stood with her arms crossed. âWell, OK, then Kim. I see how it is,â she said as she stormed back up the basement steps.
Irene looked over at Kim with a confused face. âWhat was that?â
Kim shrugged. âSheâs just grumpy. Turn the volume up. I love the opening scene!â
